The Jacobean Route in Soto de Luiña

Rectoral The seaside route of the Jacobean Route passes by Soto de Luiña. There is no doubt because one of the few Hospitals of Pilgrims that there are in this jacobean route is located in our village. The present one is a construction dating from 1713 (previously another one existed). Its Asturian baroque style reproduces the model of rural noble house, scenery with fresh and statures of carpentry of great wealth and variety. Once it was recovered, the Hospital of Pilgrims was inaugurated by Prince of Asturias when the Soto de Luiña was awarded with the Prince Felipe Prize of Exemplary Village (1.992). At the moment it is dedicated to exhibition hall, library, assembly hall, historical file, museum and parochial house. It has been avowed Historical Monument in 1.985 and declared Well of Cultural Interest.

Iglesia Santa María The Church of Santa Maria (dated from 1.712) is next to the Hospital. Its unique and singular tower turns it into an excelent example of the Asturian baroque. One of the curiosities of this construction is the inscription of the greater bell of the tower: JHS = SABES = MORTALES = QVE = SOI = QVIEN = CON = MI = LENGVA = OS = GIA. AÑO+1691. Also it is necessary to emphasize the wealth of the altarpieces of the five chapels, the furniture of century XVIII, the procesional silver cross of 1.609 and the safekeeping of 1.614. Our church has been declared Historical Monument in 1.984, have received the International Prize “Europe Nostra” 1.998 to the protection of the European Architectonic and Natural Patrimony and recently have been declared Well of Cultural Interest.
